Welcome to governance - A handbook for new school governors

Welcome to governance - A handbook for new school governors is produced by the National Governors' Association. It aims to give a brief account of the latest roles and responsibilities of governors.  It covers:

The guide takes the reader through a wide range of issues, including:

  • The composition of the governing body
  • Governing body meetings
  • Governors and Ofsted
  • School funding where does it come from?
  • Governors and the school budget
  • The curriculum and assessment
  • Special educational needs
  • Visiting the school

There is a foreword and welcome from the Secretary of State for Education, a
code of practice for governors, and a glossary to guide the new governor through unfamiliar education jargon and acronyms.

Each section aims to give enough information for a new governor to understand the issue, without overload. References to further information are provided so that the reader can find out more if, and when, they need to.

The guide is updated and re-issued regularly to take account of changes to legislation.

The price is 5 for single copies (minimum transaction rate) or 3 for multiple copies. A discount of 10 per cent applies to bulk orders of 500 copies or more. Telephone the National Governors' Association on 0121 6435787 to order a copy. You can also place your order by visiting the Publications section of the National Governors' Association website.
