Maintained Nursery Schools - Implementation of New Statutory Requirements for Governance

You're looking at an archived page, which may not reflect current policy.

The following information will advise on the implementation of the new statutory duty on all Maintained Nursery Schools (MNSs) to have a Governing body from 1 September 2003.

Detailed procedural guidance for all schools is available on GovernorNet (see link under further reading) and was issued to all schools, including maintained nursery schools, in June.  This is supplemented by a step by step training guide to establishing a Maintained Nursery School governing body - Laying the Foundations - which includes information on:

• Roles and responsibilities of Maintained Nursery School (MNS) Governing Bodies
• Establishing a MNS Governing Body
• Recruiting MNS Governors
• Managing the MNS's budget
• Teaching and learning in MNSs
• Responsibilities for staff
• Health and Safety
• Supporting children with special educational needs (SEN)
• Putting it into practice
• Further information and support

This document was published on 30 June 2003 and was sent out in the June batch mailing.  It is available to download in .pdf format (below); further hard copies can be obtained from Prolog - please quote reference DfES/0425/2003.
