Pupil Exclusion - Overview

When is it appropriate to exclude a pupil from school? What are the procedures for dealing with appeals? How does a head teacher communicate effectively with parents in such difficult circumstances? In all cases there are many issues to consider, and the need for an established framework is apparent. DCSF has drawn up detailed guidance on when and how exclusion should be implemented, and procedures for appeals against exclusion.

The 2006 exclusions guidance is available on TeacherNet and includes model letters for handling different stages of exclusion procedures. It applies with effect from 6 September 2006 to all decisions and procedures relating to exclusion.

It may also be useful to read the DCSF discussion paper on the prevention, management and funding of school exclusions: Working together on exclusions.
