Registration for EEA teachers
Teachers from other European countries working temporarily in the UK now have a duty to register with the GTCE or GTCW.
The General Teaching Council (Registration of Temporary Teachers from Relevant European States) (England and Wales) Regulations 2009 came into force on 5 January 2010. Visit the Office of Public Sector Information website to view the regulations.
The regulations introduce a duty on applicant teachers from other European countries, who wish to practise their profession on a temporary or occasional basis in England or Wales, to register with the General Teaching Council for England (GTCE) or the General Teaching Council for Wales (GTCW). This will ensure that this group of teachers is subject to the same requirements and safeguarding measures as other teachers in England and Wales, i.e. full and provisional registration.
Reminder to employers Employers in the education sector are reminded that where it becomes evident that an applicant teacher has not registered with the respective GTC, it is the responsibility of the employer to take the appropriate action.
