Apprenticeships in schools
Quality training for support staff at relatively low cost Apprenticeships can make your school more effective by helping you to address support staff skills gaps. And the good news is that funding is available in 2009-10 to cover the cost of training, meeting the full cost for 16-18 year olds, at least half the cost for 18-25 year olds and a similar proportion for those over 25.
Who can apply? Apprenticeships are principally aimed at young people aged 16 to 25, although they are open to people aged over 25 on a more limited basis. They are available to both new starters and existing employees who want to develop their skills.
Which roles are covered? Apprenticeships are available covering a wide range of school support staff roles including:
- Teaching assistants and similar roles supporting teaching and learning;
- Administrative and finance staff;
- ICT technicians and support staff;
- Science, design and technology and food technicians;
- Library staff;
- Premises and catering staff; and
- Nursery nursing roles in those schools with nursery units.
How does an apprenticeship work in practice? The school or local authority employs the apprentice for at least the duration of the apprenticeship. Qualification typically takes around one year for NVQ Level 2 learners and eighteen months for Level 3 learners. The off-the-job training takes place at a college or other recognised learning provider either during twilight sessions, evening sessions or day-release. This means the apprentice spends the majority of their time in school and their training has little or no adverse impact on the timetable.
Apart from funding for training, is there any other assistance for schools? Yes. The National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) have a full time member of staff in each region who is responsible for supporting public sector apprenticeship employers; a service to match apprenticeships offered by employers to those seeking apprenticeship places; and can give advice about training providers in your area who can support you in recruiting and providing training for apprentices.
Where can I get more information? Contact the NAS helpline on 0800 150 600 or visit their website.
