Teachers' TV: black education

Teachers TV marks the beginning of Black History Month with a week of programmes looking at a range of key issues in black education.

Statistics show that boys of African Caribbean heritage start school at average academic levels. Further into their education, however, just 30 per cent of black boys achieve five good GCSEs compared to the national average of 54 per cent. Teachers TV investigates possible reasons why and examines how three schools are addressing the problem in School Matters: Black Boys on 4 October, 8.30pm.

  • In Estelle Morris Meets William Atkinson (4 October, 9.30pm), the former education secretary interviews the nationally recognised headteacher and inspiration behind Lenny Henry's character in the BBC drama Hope and Glory.
  • In KS3/4 History: Integrating Black History (2, October 11pm), the difficulties of teaching the subject and some of the preconceptions surrounding it are tackled head-on in a lesson on Queen Elizabeth and the black Moores.
  • Estelle Morris Meets Trevor Phillips (3 October, 8pm)
The former education secretary interviews the chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality, Trevor Phillips.
  • KS3/4 History: Black History Workshop (2 October, 3pm)
This hands-on and practical workshop offers a number of active-learning techniques designed to help you teach Black British History.

All programmes are available to download and watch from the Teachers' TV website and on Sky Guide 880, Telewest 240, ntl 240, Homechoice 845 and Freeview 88.
