Vocational Education Week on TTV

All this week, Teachers TV is screening a range of programmes investigating the status of vocational education in the UK.

A major highlight of the week (4-10 June 2007) will be The Jonathan Dimbleby Big Debate: Was Tomlinson Right? in which a panel of experts debate whether recent Government initiatives, such as a new set of vocation-friendly diplomas at GCSE, are proving that Sir Mike Tomlinson's recommendations for school reform might not have been far off the mark.

Also during the week, School Matters: Diplomas explores the ideas behind the initiative, from the thinking at its root to the practicalities of offering diplomas to students.

Vocational Education: How Do They Do It In Germany? explores the reasons behind the popularity and success of Germany's vocational education system, through which more than two thirds of the country's young people enter apprenticeships.

Other programmes in the week include:

  • Vocational GCSEs, a series which looks at how schools around the country encourage vocational GCSEs.
  • Secondary 14-19 Vocational Education, a series with programmes covering work placements, apprenticeships and vocational education, from catering to construction.
  • Vocation, Vocation, Vocation, which looks at how schools are raising achievement by incorporating vocational training into the curriculum.
  • The FE: Teaching for the Future series has valuable tips for FE teachers looking to sharpen up their skills.
  • The Skills Championships series covers the WorldSkills Championships which brings together young people from all over the globe to compete every two years in vocational skills.
  • Life Stuff: Working Week follows the busy lives of six young people, from 22-30 years old, to give students a real flavour of a working week.

Teachers TV is available on Sky Guide 880, Virgin TV 240, Freeview 88 (from 11am 1pm) and Tiscali TV 845. For more information, including programme times and free support material go to www.teachers.tv.
