Taking the Chair
Following the successful launch events and distribution to all local authorities (LAs) and Diocesan Boards, the Taking the Chair materials are now available online. This skills-based training programme is the first of two training programmes which together form the National Development Project for Chairs of Governing Bodies and Headteachers. The second programme from the project, Leading together is also available available online.
Taking the Chair, a flexible 5 module, practical and problem solving programme aims to explore the skills required to lead and manage the work of a school governing body. It is targeted at prospective and new chairs and vice-chairs of governing bodies and committees, who wish to develop their confidence and skills, and experienced chairs who are keen to review their effectiveness in the role.
The programme uses a variety of learning approaches and emphasises the practical application of knowledge and skills.
To complement the programme, Taking the Chair is available as a facilitator handbook and as a stand-alone distance-learning pack.
It is recommended that people embarking on the distance-learning programme contact their LA’s governor-services teams for assistance and advice.
As well as being available online, copies of the distance learning pack and the facilitator toolkit can be obtained from the DCSF School Governance Team by emailing governor.materials@dcsf.gsi.gov.uk.
There is no copyright on these materials as long as they are used for the purposes of governor training. DCSF should also be acknowledged as the funders and the Eastern Leadership Centre Partnership as authors.
