Very interesting this one. What are their objections? If the minutes are passed and signed off then surely they are in the public domain - with the exception of the pink bits. Attitudes towards the internet can vary enormously from school to school and from one GB to another; now the newspapers are full of 'safeguarding' procedures for the future so what do the powers that be have to say about using the internet?. And what about this site? It can be controversial - but those who register can access forums and discussions like this. This is the 21st century!

Undercover,

Since January this year Schools must have a 'Publication Scheme' in place for information that any person may reasonably expect to view.

Publication schemes includes minutes of meetings!

Go back to the GB and ask them where is the scheme.....wait for the dumb founded look..... and then suggest the internet is the most cost effective and easily accessible way to 'publish' such information.

UI - The behaviour of your HT/CoG is outragious. don't they know these are public documents?

I don't know what you can do in this situation - perhaps consider giving a copy to the PTA!. Remember if you do you may have to give a copy as a parent not as a member of the GB. And to do that, if your CoG is being a real pain, you may have to make a FOI request to obtain them as a parent. But if they are behaving like idiots what else can you do

Good luck

If you are a gov and you receive copies of the minutes why don't YOU put them online. You can get a free blog at wordpress.com or blogger.com which would be more than adequate to do so.

As TWM said they're acting like idiots :-)

In any case the school MUST have FOI publication scheme in place and the minutes of meetings should be publised automatically and easily accessible to any interested person.

I would raise the issue as an agenda item at the next FGB meeting and if that fails to illicit the right response then report the school to the Information Commissioner in your capacity as a Parent :-)

Yes of course you can request any documents!

Just be specific in your request otherwise the school (probably advised by the LA) will try to say the search for such information will take too long or be too expensive!!

I suggest you ask for the results of the last two parent governor eletions, copies of correspondance sent to parents informing them of the election and copies of the candidates nomination papers.

The school may try to block details of the candidates citing Data Protection and 'personal details' but this will not wash as the candidates will have already put their names in the public domain as Parent Governor elections are public elections and details of candidates have to be circulated to all voters (i.e. Parents) before the election takes place.

Hi.

This is an excellent for making a FOI request

www.whatdotheyknow.com

If the school is not already listed just email the website developers and they will add it so you can use the website to make completely public FOI requests and then everyone can see if the school is being deliberately obstructive or is actually complying with the law!

Make sure you have a 'working' school email address as I discovered that my school deliberately tried to use a redundant email address to delay things....all sanctioned by the CoG :-(
